I had to throw some numbers in on this thread. Although I do not use cmd.php anymore due to the size of my install, I did not see anyone with such large numbers of DS's and RRD's. Here goes:

Cacti Server:
Redhat Enterprise Linux AS 4
Quad Intel Xeon 3GHz w/ 4GB RAM

08/04/2005 05:15:45 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time: 45.2177 s, Method: cactid, Processes: 6, Threads: 20, Hosts: 212, Hosts/Process: 36, Data Sources 18348, RRDs Processed 9576

This box does nothing but Cacti and Mysql just for Cacti. The stats above include devices around all of Europe, North America, and South America. I still have to add devices in Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Mainly polling routers with frame relay interfaces; and gathering ping statistics and cpu usage.

841 data sources.

Very amazed at the reduction in time!

We get some excellent results using Cactid on Win2K:

08/28/2005 02:25:20 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time: 20.5758 s, Method: cactid, Processes: 16, Threads: 4, Hosts: 91, Hosts/Process: 6, Data Sources 1630, RRDs Processed 1055
08/28/2005 02:20:17 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time: 16.8528 s, Method: cactid, Processes: 16, Threads: 4, Hosts: 91, Hosts/Process: 6, Data Sources 1630, RRDs Processed 1055
08/28/2005 02:15:20 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time: 20.6418 s, Method: cactid, Processes: 16, Threads: 4, Hosts: 91, Hosts/Process: 6, Data Sources 1630, RRDs Processed 1055
08/28/2005 02:10:21 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time: 20.7185 s, Method: cactid, Processes: 16, Threads: 4, Hosts: 91, Hosts/Process: 6, Data Sources 1630, RRDs Processed 1055
08/28/2005 02:05:16 PM - SYSTEM STATS: Time: 16.6499 s, Method: cactid, Processes: 16, Threads: 4, Hosts: 91, Hosts/Process: 6, Data Sources 1630, RRDs Processed 1055

This is using:

cacti 0.8.6f
cactid 0.8.6e
rrdtool 1.0.49
php 5.0.4
mysql 4.1.10 (InnoDB)
net-snmp 5.2.1-1

Running on:

Windows 2000 SP4
Dell PowerEdge 1750
2 x Xeon 3.2Ghz
2GB RAM

(The server also does a few other tasks, hence the stupidly high spec).

Sorry that I can't provide any comparison for cmd.php as we stopped using it almost immediately.

Someone has probably done this before, but it would be cool if the polling time was incorporated into the localhost template. That way you can see the trend of your polling time.

Darwin,

Were you referring to Cactid 0.8.6f?

No, not even. The only thing I did was change from cacti 0.8.6f to cacti 0.8.6g.

Still using cactid 0.8.6e.

I'm just surprised by the improvement in the time it took to process everything, from 120s to 22s? Amazing. :)

You are also processing a lot less data sources. I also had to reconfigure some data after upgrading. Maybe you are just missing some graphs.

And now my Cacti Stats with Cactid running 0.8.6g on a Suse 9.3 Linux.

Machine:

IBM Blade
Dual Intel(R) Xeon(TM) CPU 2.80GHz
4 Gig RAM

Yikes, my bad.. Totally missed that..

Hmm, which leads me to wonder why the number of data sources processed has gone down and which ones are missing. Strange. Time to investigate I suppose.

Cacti 0.8.6g with cactid 0.8.6e on Windows 2000 Server with SP4, running on HP Proliant DL380 server with 2 x Xeon HT 3,2 GHz and 1 GB RAM.

Machine is also running MRTG, that tends to interfere with Cacti so I do believe the values below could be better if the machine was dedicated.

SYSTEM STATS: Time:96.1151 Method:cmd.php Processes:8 Threads:N/A Hosts:127 HostsPerProcess:16 DataSources:13667 RRDsProcessed:5747
SYSTEM STATS: Time:38.1848 Method:cactid Processes:8 Threads:24 Hosts:127 HostsPerProcess:16 DataSources:13667 RRDsProcessed:5747
