OMG..I had the same issue too which is sorted out by putting the poller interval back to what it was before...

oh no I'm now on 20 sec interval, desperately wanting to increase the time between polls but error pop up when i put it back to 1 minute

Thanks for the post. I followed it and now it's all fixed.

To wrap this up:

1) change poller interval
2) change step, Associated RRA's and heartbeat to new value. (heartbeat = step x 2). Be aware to change all data source items (eg Interface stats has 2 data source items)
3) remove all RRA's at /var/www/cacti/rra
4) rebuild Poller cache via CLI or GUI
