Yes, but this would adjust the scale according to that value too. And I won't want that.

I actually posted this bug in the bug tracker some time ago. Too bad I didn't see this thread sooner; I could have answered your question from the first post.
I've looked at the code, and to quickly sum up the issue, a datasource will not be included unless it is used for a visible graph element. This results in a broken graph if you try to do this, as has been noted in this thread. This is squarely a cacti problem. Fixing it will mean a different algorithm for selecting these elements- the existing one is not very good anyway- and I may try to do this myself soon, since I need this funtionality.
