Collecting data from remote machines using scripts

Post by shane »

Hello all:

We are running lot of custom services (unlike standard services like apache, qmail, etc). When the host template is Local Linux machine, we are able to collect the data for these services using simple script files. However, we have lot of servers.

Are there any recommendations for collecting data from remote servers. Is there a simple way to wrap the script files into SNMP so that the data can be accessed remotely? Or Is there a host template like "Remote Linux Machine", which opens a secure shell or remote shell to fetch data? Or is it possible/recommended to run cacti on all the servers and on the main cacti server have some wget like scripts which fetch the data from the remote cacti servers?

Any recommendations/How-tos in this regard are greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Shane

Thanks for the links!

I will explore wrapping my scripts with SNMP by following the instructions here: http://www.dreness.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=7
