Version problem

I've been trying for a week to get this running in a stable manner. I've been reading these forums and finding most of the answers I needed. Those I couldn't find, I was able to figure out myself. But I've run into a wall.

Using the beta installer and IIS, a clean install works. PHP then starts having access violations. It's a known problem with PHP 5.2.1 ISAPI module. So graphs are made and updated. They just can't be displayed. The recommended solustion is to roll back PHP to 5.2.0 or use apache.

Tried that, but cacti won't run with 5.2.0. Poller hangs and never completes. Graphs are never updated. They can be displayed though.

So I uninstalled everthing. Installed apache 2.2. The beta isntaller doesn't work with it. So I followed the windows install instructions located at http://bsod2600.home.comcast.net/install_windows.html.

I copied and pasted the mysqladmin commands, didn't match the expected output in the instructions. Ran the cacti-security command, not sure if it completed properly or not.
The initial page for logging in as admin/admin doesn't come up. Instead the paths page comes up, and generates errors in apache logs.

So, the simplest and seemingly most effective method of getting this running would be to uninstall everything. Reinstall IIS. Use the beta installer, then roll PHP back to a stable ISAPI version. But what would that be?

Or is this something that can be fixed easily under apache?

Honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to try. Pasted below are some of the current manual install under apache problems I'm running into.

You are correct, rolling back PHP to verison 5.2.0 is the best way to do this. When you do this, replace everything in c:\php, except the php.ini file, with the contents of the php5.2.0.zip. When you do this, php should work fine.

*NOTE: Before replacing anything in PHP, you will want to stop the IIS admin Service. It will also stop the HTTP something or other, and the W3SVC service as well. When you have php downgraded using said instructions, you can start the services back up, and everything should be running great for you.

Actually, I tried rolling back to 5.2.0 with the beta installer set. It didn't work. The poller hangs and never finishes it's process.

Per BSOD2600's post, cacti doesn't like PHP 5.2.0.

Looks like you were really close to getting it working. When you used the beta installer, to downgrade to php 5.2.0, you must stop all IIS services and then overwrite the php files.

As for your current situation, there are several problems.
1) mysql output looks ok
2) CACTI-SECURITY Output is ok -- those warnings are about a missing account thats present on Win2K3
3) Apache errors -- those point to NTFS security not being properly set.

Cacti likes PHP 5.2.0 fine, I have run 2 win 2003 servers off it. If I were you, I would scrap everything, get rid of Apache, that just adds a level of complexity not needed when running on a Windows box. Do a fresh install of the beta. Then replace the php files to revert bacvk to 5.2.0 as I stated earlier. This s exactly what I have done a couple times, and it worked both times. Let me know what your going to do. Thanks!

I did stop IIS prior to replacing it.

Ok, so I started all over again.

IIS with the beta installer.

Built the base system, added a couple of devices, defined a couple of graphs then added hosts to the tree. Then I let it run for a while.

I failed after a couple of hours with the PHP Acessess violation as I expected.

I stopped IIS, replaced PHP 5.2.1 with 5.2.0.

Can't get any pages to show at all now. I'm sure I missed something since I followed the same procedure I used the first time when 5.2.0 worked with the poller hang.

1) How exactly did you replace php -- with their installer or zip file? You want the zip file, since it contains all the extensions and shouldn't overwrite your existing php.ini file.

2) Did you stop all IIS services before replacing the php files so they weren't in use?

3) Verify php is functional, by making a simple php and running it from anywhere in your website.

First I rebooted the system to insure that it really was the php bug and not a permissions error. Graphs worked again after reboot. So it was the ISAPI bug.

I replaced php by stopping IIS, then renaming the original php folder to php 5.2.1. Then extracting the zip file for 5.2.0 to c:/php. I used your windows install guide to configure php.ini after that.

php is running. this was run from the cacti folder.

put everything back to original. rebooted. pages came back. Of course PHP errored out with Access Violations again.

This time instead of renaming the php folder, I just extracted 5.2.0 over the top of it. Rebooted again. Pages worked.

Tested the poller. using cmd.php the cmd window opened and closed immedietly. the cmd window with the poller command running just hung.

Switched poller to cactid. Seems to be working. I'll let it run over night.

What impact will I have using cactid instead of cmd.php? Do I gain or loose anything?

The catid poller is faster and more efficient then the cmd poller. So its not a bad thing. You did keep the original php.ini file from the 5.2.1 install in the c:\php directory correct?

Yes, I kept it.

Everything seems to be running properly. It ran over night with no errors.

I'll let it run over the weekend before I start digging into adding custom items.

I do have another question though. I don't see email notification for downed hosts anywhere. Have a pointer on where to start?

I would suggest using the manage plugin if you would like to recieve e-mails from downed hosts. You can get audio from the monito plugin, but it doesn't e-mail at the moment. You might also look into the thold plugin which allows you to set threshholds for your hosts, and recieve mail when they reach them, or go down I believe. All these can be found at:
