I am not entirely sure how Cacti calculates its averages. If I increase the frequency of the scheduled task that does the polling of the devices, does that increase the count of polls calculated in the 5 minute average thus making it a little more accurate when dealing with more dynamic devices?
First: AVERAGEs are calculated by rrdtool itself, not by cacti
Second: AFAIK, it makes no sense to update every minute if rrd file step size is 300.
Third: Best resource to get _exact_ answers to such a question would be the rrdtool-users mailinglist
