TWE2002: I may be mistaken, but the current version of Cacti / Cactid / Boost is designed to be run all on the same machine.

I have read and seen references of people who use the long desired "Distributed" method. I even see hooks in the code that are geared towards future implementations of Cacti in a distributed model.

I do not think the current versions truly support a native install in a distributed manner.
I think Cacti v9 has this in the road map.

Can anyone else comment?
Thank you,

Ernie

TWE2002,

Boost is designed to allow you to distribute your environment as such:
  • 1 - Database Server
2 - Poller with Native Access to RRDfiles (full Cacti install). Possibly no http, optional
3 - One to many HTTP Servers
So, theoretically, it works today. I have not performed a deployment yet. But here is how it would go.
  • 1 - On your poller, export the RRA and LOG directories
2 - On your HHTP servers, install Cacti, mount the exported rra and log directories where they should be if it were a local install.
3 - Configure your boost server to accept connections from the two HTTP servers.
4 - Enable Image Caching in boost.
5 - Make sure that your HTTP instance of the boost image cache directory is writable by the apache user on both systems (make this a local directory to each server).
6 - Make sure that Apache have read/write access to the exported log directory and read access to the rra directory.
7 - Finally, put a load balancer in front of the HTTP servers or even RRDNS.
8 - Wait, setup a cron on each HTTP server to clean out stale entries in the boost image cache directory periodically.
This is about it I think. Like I said, theoretically, it should work. I know that I designed it with that in mind.

It looks like the boost server is crashing on you. Can you maybe turn off the boost server and set the permissions so that Apache account can update the RRD files? You may have update your PHP. If the boost server is crashing, it's likely a PHP bug (memory leak), which reminds me. How much memory is PHP being allowed to consume? Check your php.ini file.

All,

I am pleased to announce Boost v1.2. This version correct's some anomalies encountered by me during testing.

1) Specifically, the boost process is creating a session file. This is not desirable.

2) If there is bad information in your poller_output table, it can cause problems for boost.

Both these issues have been corrected in the latest release.

Regards,

I noticed the 1.2 zipfile does not contain the modified or lib directories;

is there a install path for getting boost 1.2 running?

Do i need to install 1.0, then 1.1, then 1.2?

If you have PIA 1.1++, you do not need the files. Therefore, since this plugin was designed for PIA 1.1++, I have removed them.

[edited] - Fixed Issue.

The problem was not related to Boost or Cacti.

1) did you read the instructions?
2) did you test on a development server first?
3) are you running memory table or myisam?
4) how big is your boost table?

You could be a bit more informative than that...

For those wondering, I'm still here, but lost in the shadows. Yearning for less bugs. Who want's a Cacti 1.3/2.0? Streams anyone?

A few more things...

1. You have to dos2unix the cacti_rrdsvc file with Boost 1.2

Im wondering why my boost server keeps going down. With boost 1.0, the cacti_rrdsvc init script started the server fine, and seemed to keep it running, however, now, it does not do that. The server may run for 9 hours straight, or it may only run for 9 minutes. Im not seeing any errors at all. Has anyone else experienced these problems?
