Forsing a host to be up?

Post by bspencer »

I have a host which is SNMP enabled, however, it doesn't contain/answer to the standard SNMP OIDs (it is an appliance -- actually it is a squid appliance without an SNMP agent). Because the host won't answer correctly to snmp ping queries, cacti marks the host down and as a result cacti won't graph the results.

I prefer using the "SNMP - Generic OID Template" data template and not a custom script (which makes setting the host name to localhost in the host definition impossible).

The only idea I had is to write a query which switches the status in MySQL for this host to a 3. Are there better options?

That doesn't work either

Updating the table doesn't seem to work either because (during the run) cacti confirms that the host is up (which makes sense actually) during the run. It seems that setting "Downed Host Detection" to Ping only is my other option -- and hope that all hosts are allowed to be pinged. :-?

Well, if you update to PHP 5.x, and Cacti 0.8.6j your device will come up. I changed to ping up method to perform a getnext. Unfortunately, php 4.x does not support the php_snmp "getnext" method.

Also, you can have your cron run as root and use the poller method snmp and ping with Cacti 0.8.6j as well and the host will report up.

The choice is yours.

only one needs to succeed?

Post by bspencer »

If I read the second part of your post, with the ping & SNMP option, it only requires one of them to succeed in order for the host to be reported up -- not both?

Thanks
