I've seen PHP take a lot more than that.

There is good news and bad news.

The good news is, the server didn't lockup over the weekend.

The bad news is, the load of the machine is back up to 6.0 (and even spiked to 8.0)

I only have some 60 clients on this server, and the hardware specs are good. Is this kind of load normal?

No way. You have something very wrong. You should post your logs and top output.

I have logs and graphs posted in this thread. http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread. ... ost2215452

I restarted the server to pre-empt the lockup that was apparently coming.

Give me a list of the logs you want, and I'll pull together a control by copying up the logs now. Then, when the load jumps, I'll post those logs/top.

It seems I had the log files turned off. I have turned them back on, and I will post them after a few polls.

The server is running well, and with a small load, so this should be a good control to compare the logs when the server load skyrockets like it does.

Do a run at MEDIUM and let's look at what is causing your poll time to be so long. I suspect you have some nasty scripts or something. Oh, and with cmd.php, if you have these nasty (sometimes never finish) scripts, you are in trouble. Your best bet is to move to Cactid which allows for timeouts on script that "actually" work.

Your answer is Cactid. More than likely you are overrunning your server with CMD.PHP call's and then you get them stacking up on top of them selves and whamo, the system get's overloaded.

CMD.PHP is intended only to get your feed wet with Cacti. It is not good enough for what I would refer to as a mission critical production monitoring system. This is why we have Cactid.

Is enabling Cactid as simple as switching it in the settings manager? Or is there more to it?

No, you have to download the source and then make it. Prior to doing so you need to install a few packages:

(Redhat specific)

up2date -i net-snmp-devel
up2date -i mysql-devel

Unzip the source file then the following:

./configure --pefix=/usr
make
make install
cp cactid.conf /etc
vi /etc/cactid.conf <- complete the form
:wq

turn logging to medium

cactid <- run this, make sure you get output

Code: Select all

CACTID: MYSQL: Connection Failed: Access denied for user 'cactiuser'@'localhost' (using password: YES)
there is the output I received when I ran cactid from the terminal. Am I missing some sort of configuration?
