CACTI VMWare Image under VMWARE ESX

Post by frme »

Hello all,

i tried the vmware image of cacti. It works execellent in the VMware Playerb
but not under my VMware ESX Server 2.5.3.

http://www.cacti.net/downloads/packages/VMware/

I registered the file CactiVM.vmx and then the esx server hangs.
Only unregisering the files and removing the files help to start the server again.

Any idee? :-?

I would suggest trying an install of CactiEZ on a new VM.

Make sure you look up how to fix Linux clock drift though.. I had a hard time with the clock running super fast until I added all of the fixes.

I just loaded the cactiez-0.4 and it also is not working on ESX. Is there a fix for this?

I had this problem with a BSD image posted a while back. it loaded fine in the VMware Server platform, but it tanked on the ESX server. it turned out that the VMware image was built with a disk type that was not supported by ESX. I don't remember the details of it, but that was the problem in the end. I didn't have the time or energy to try and troubleshoot the problem, so i abandoned that project.

I hope that helps point things in the right direction.

We finally got this working under esx. Here are the items which resolved the issue:

1. upgraded esx to the latest version which included support for centOS v4

2. recreated the vmware image because a snapshot had been taken at some point. Esx doesn't like these apparently...

3. Esx is picky about the disk type the image uses. If I'm not mistaken we went with IDE, but I'm not 100% certain offhand.

4. Time drift was a big problem. I ended up putting 4 statements in cron to run ntpdate every 15 seconds. Suggest you read about this in more detail on vmware forums as it is a know problem with linux under vmware...

Regards,
