Addtional Data Input Sources

First off thanks; glad you find cacti useful. So I take it you want to gather system stats from other remote hosts? I'll assume you know how to create the data sources, but getting the data is the challenge no doubt.

I have done this a little myself using the net-snmp package. I know by default it includes MIB's to monitor basic aspects of a host (cpu, load avg, disk, etc). I also know that the functionality can be extended to running any command you want, but you'd have to consult net-snmp's docs for that.

Yes that is quite understandable, I wouldn't want to run a web server on my firewall either! I am thinking that net-snmp may be your answer here.

Check your snmpd.conf, mine is in:

/etc/snmp/snmpd.conf

There is a lot of comments about how you can run just about any program and give it an OID.

Try doing an snmpwalk of:

.enterprises.ucdavis

To see some default entries for net-snmp. Good luck!
