Status: Unknown, Availability 100%, no rrd files

First, my apologies to epoxi for plagiarizing your subject
I'm new to Cacti and SNMP and am not getting any graphs. The status of my devices (including Localhost) is Unknown, but they all show 100% Availability. I've searched the forum but haven't yet found a solution or clear troubleshooting steps.

Here is my setup:

RHEL4 running as a VMware guest
cacti-0.8.6j
rrdtool-1.2.18
php-4.3.9-3.12
mysql-server-4.1.20-1.RHEL4.1
net-snmp-5.1.2-11.EL4.7
net-snmp-utils-5.1.2-11.EL4.7
php-snmp-4.3.9-3.12
Poller type is cmd.php

With the poller logging level set to DEBUG, poller.php gives the following output:
[cactiuser@nagioscm ~]$ php /usr/local/cacti/poller.php
Content-type: text/html
X-Powered-By: PHP/4.3.9

02/02/2007 10:41:47 AM - POLLER: Poller[0] DEBUG: About to Spawn a Remote Process [CMD: /usr/bin/php, ARGS: -q /usr/local/cacti-0.8.6j/cmd.php 0 2]
Waiting on 1/1 pollers.

...
02/02/2007 10:46:40 AM - POLLER: Poller[0] Maximum runtime of 292 seconds exceeded. Exiting.
02/02/2007 10:46:40 AM - SYSTEM STATS: Time:293.2246 Method:cmd.php Processes:1 Threads:N/A Hosts:3 HostsPerProcess:3 DataSources:7 RRDsProcessed:0
PHP Warning: pclose(): 53 is not a valid stream resource in /usr/local/cacti-0.8.6j/lib/rrd.php on line 48
Because there are no rrd files, Graph Debug Mode give this error:
ERROR: opening '/usr/local/cacti-0.8.6j/rra/moon03_mem_buffers_8.rrd': No such file or directory
I get the feeling that this is something simple, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any suggestions or other output I should provide?

Solved (maybe)

After much searching and a little tweaking I think I've got it working.

I found a reference to Cacti being able to use either net-snmp or php-snmp and since I had both installed I removed php-snmp. Now my device status is Up and I'm getting graphs. There's no data yet but that's to be expected since they just came up. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for data to show up...
