Any suggestions on working with negative numbers?

I'm trying to collect and graph Recieved Signal Levels from Proxim Tsunami Radios and having no luck. I've verified that snmpget gathers the numbers I'm looking for, But haven't been able to verify what gets stored in mysql and only "NaN" makes it to the rra file.
