Websphere and DB2 templates

Post by knobdy »

Since I'm already making requests, how about these too.

I'm sure it can be done without the need to develop an SNMP agent...right?

We are already running some WebSphere "probes", no DB2 UDB at the time of writing (but we'd love to hear about some ideas on that topic). All are implemented as shell/perl scripts to be run as cgi to form an "overview" html page for instant access. For use with cacti, we simply wget those scripts/values and parse them to cacti's needs.
But those are highly installation dependend, I suppose...

Can you clean the scripts up for sharing? I'd like to take a look at them at least... though I was hoping that Websphere had it's own agent. I saw where they have one you can buy, but this has been a completely free solution for us thus far and we'd prefer to keep it that way (then instead of upgrading our OpenView, CiscoWorks and Tivoli environments we can just donate some money to these projects!).

Ours were not made because we lack Tivoli  We only lack good support for WebSphere Internals :(
Let me see what I can do as they were written by our WebSphere Admin ...

It seems that after laying out all that money for Tivoli no one here uses it, no one here likes it - not even the AIX admins who presumably wanted it in the first place!

Sorry, I was misunderstood. We do use Tivoli to a great extend to monitor systems and applications and to help our operations staff managing those loads of systems. But currently its weak in displaying tasks... Lets see what the Candle merger brings us here. But this was already quite off topic.
I asked our websphere admin about his scripts. But they are based on mainly log file parsing which is greatly application dependant. As we wrote our main application ourselves, we get lots of things out of them. We decided not to use ARM techniques because we fear the overhead. But we do not have current practical knowledge on this.

Sorry I'm responding so late.

Check the website in my .sig. I've got some general websphere and db2 notes that might be useful. Neither is going into Cacti directly but all you need is scripts to return numbers and pump those into RRD or let Cacti do it.

Email me if you have any questions.

I just saw your response and went out and looked at your scripts. Have you gone any further in your rrd tool investigation? Did you land on Cacti? Have you created templates for your scripts yet?! ;)

Unfortunately I've not gone much farther. I've switched companies since I posted that. I could get something up and running on a vmware instance with the trial version of DB2 and give it a shot. I can do the same for WAS as well.

It may take me a few days to get refreshed but with the holiday weekend coming up, I should have some time.

Ping me again with a PM on Wed. next week and we'll see where I'm at.

As much as I would appreciate that - and I REALLY would - I don't think even I can ask that you work over the holiday weekend.

Spend that time with the fam and I can ping you after the 1st or when you next have the time.

ok it's been a few years since this thread was updated ... but having recently switched companies and I'm now working for somewhere that has both DB2 and WAS7 in place I'd be very interested in any development / Templates that could be worked on to get this going again. Is there any interest in this - I'm more than happy to put in the work for this.

I've tried to use the DB2 template from docs.cacti.net but to be honest it wasn't what I expected - I was looking for something more like the MySQL templates I've used previously that provides oodles of information about the server and how MySQL is performing.

And as for WAS, well found nothing for this at all in relation to Cacti which was a bit of a surprise and disappointment.

Thanks - J.

Hi julian,

I would love to be able to monitor Websphere. So please share if you got something :-)

Hi - sorry no, I've had far to much other work on to take a look at this. And also as someone who has never worked with websphere before I also need to get a lot more familiar with it.

I have successfully got some nagios plugins working with websphere and pulling back some useful metrics so in the past its not been to difficult to use this with cacti, just means you need to create a few of your own templates.

As for DB2 this is not looking bad now, there's a lot less graphs that say for the mysql templates in cacti but I added a bunch of bufferpool stats to a single graph without to much trouble.

Thanks - J.
