IP addressing database

Post by fabio »

Hello,

I have been looking for some solution/aplication/tool to keep our IP addressing manageable, and make it visible to different users.

The issue I have in mind and that I have been wondering is to create something like IPPLAN, which is a very good idea, under CACTI as a new plug-in. The reason why we haven't changed our MS Access Database that actually contains our data to IPPLAN is that this tool is only maintained by only one guy, and doesn't seem to have too much future, as cacti and its plug-ins does.

So, let me challenge some php developer to integrate something like IPPLAN as a plug-in with CACTI, I created a query for CACTI that retrieved the IP Route Table, and like IPPLAN, the idea would be to query the IP Route Table of our routers and firewalls, and assigning it to the different customers created. All the info would be available in the mysql database. IPPLAN already works this way.

Thank you for reading this post. I would find this very, very useful.

Best regards,

Fabian.

You might want to consider something like NorthStar, which is an Open-Source package to manage IP addresses from the other end (you allocate them in NorthStar then use them). The routing table method seems a bit scary to me. Like seeing if a port is allocated to a customer based on whether it has link right now.

Besides, RIPE (and I guess ARIN, AfriNIC, etc) will be easier to update from your documented use of the address than from what the router is doing... I have a perl script we use internally that compares our ip allocation database to the current routing tables, and to RIPE, to find errors, but not as the management tool itself.

or am I missing something?
Weathermap 0.98a is out! & QuickTree 1.0. Superlinks is over there now (and built-in to Cacti 1.x).
Some Other Cacti tweaks, including strip-graphs, icons and snmp/netflow stuff.
(Let me know if you have UK DevOps or Network Ops opportunities, too!)

Best regars,
