Broken images, no logging available

I have the same problem with graphs being broken images, however, I have *no* logging. None. Zip. I've double checked my permissions and they all look good from what I can see. I've got all the necessary tools installed (rrd/mysql etc etc) yet it refuses to work. It will happily poll my devices, my syslog shows the crontab chugging away every 5 minutes, but /var/www/cacti/rra has no files, and a .placeholder of 0 size, as does /var/www/cacti/log.

What have I screwed up? I followed the instructions as per the book. This is running on ubuntu 6.10, non apt-get version (all manually installed).

Please run the poller manually. To do so, please login as cactiuser (or whoever is running the poller). cd to the cacti directory and

You should see some output that may help debugging
