Changed ifAlias not showing up

Post by Sam Brown »

Hi guys (and gals).

I've changed the interface descriptions to a whole mess of logical ports on my Juniper M7i. None of the new ifAlias values are showing up on the traffic graph headers though. (It looks as if it's using ifDescr there instead.) I've checked with snmpget, and the ifAlias HAS updated, cactus just seems not to see it. There are some older interfaces whose graphs have always shown ifAlias on the same page, and these still work. Just none of the changes show up for the interfaces that are freshly labled.

The guy who set up our cactus server suggested wiping out the databases, the poller whatzit, and the graphs, and recreating them, as he's seen that clear up the problem before. We tried, no luck.

You may want to refresh the cached device information for those devices by clicking the "re-index" (green circle) button next to the Data Query when editing the device
Then "Reapply Suggest Names" from Graph Management action dropdown when selecting your graphs.

No luck.

Making sure I clicked the right green circle and such:

We're talking the green circle you get to from:

Console -> Devices -> DeviceName -> Associated Data Queries
...and then on the top right of that box?

And then for the Reapply Suggested names:

Console -> Graph Management
...jump ahead several pages to the device...
...click the checkbox for each graph...
"Action" dropdown in lower right corner, select Reapply Suggested Names
Click Go
Confirm
Go to next page of managed graphs
Repeat last 5 steps as needed for all interfaces of device.

Did I miss something?

top right??? Its on each line, isn't it?

Yep, that's the correct procedure

Well, now that we're talking about it, there is only one line in the Associate Data Queries box. Calling it the "upper" right may have been misleading.

Hitting the Verbose Query debug link in that box, I see that the SNMP walk is indeed finding the ifAliases for the links. They still don't show up on the graphs except for the old ones that were there before my recent additions.

Ha, hmm. Did they show up before? Are you aware of the way, cacti finds the title strings when running a Data Query? You may want to have a look at your specific Data Query. Next, select the Graph Template you're using. Find Suggested Values section. Make the title for your Graph Template using |ifAlias| topmost. Then cacti will try to use this title format first. But if not all values are given, it will take the next one until a match is found.

That worked! I had actually looked at the Graph Templates before, but the one I thought it was already did have ifAlias. I have no idea which graph template those are pulling from, but I went ahead and stuck |query_ifAlias| at the top of all of the templates, and that was it.

Many thanks. If you're ever in L.A., I owe you sushi.

That really sounds good to me. But I suppose, that's about 10,000 km from here. But my car navigation system won't tell me exactly how far, weird ... :D

You have to get the special tires with the paddles and the bluetooth enabled PNP hubcaps that relay all those capabilities to the navcom before it unlocks the transoceanic mapping. Still, L.A. tends to draw people in and it looks like I'll be here for several years still. Offer stands if you find yourself in this part of the world.
