Nortel Baystack/Passport?

Post by scroger2 »

Greetings everyone,

I apologize for this blanket request, but ....

I am new to monitoring and newer to Cacti, which I totally love. Are there any Nortel users out there that might be interested in sharing templates and/or scripts that I might not be even aware of? I am looking primarily at items specifically for traffic/bandwith/utilization/etc for the Passport 8600,8300,1600, and Baystack470.

Thank you
Roger (uber newbie)

We run some Nortel switches, Baystack 450's, 470's, 420's, BPS 2000's, 5510's, 5520's and PP8600's too. We just used the standard Cacti Interface that came with the "Generic SNMP-enabled Host" template without any problems. I did write some custom stuff for the 8600 though to get the CPU & backplane utilization and temperature. I don't have those exported into templates though but I'll export them tommorow and post them for ya if you're interested.

One thing to also note is that for any gigabit port, make sure your use the 64-bit counters (it's an option when you're creating your graphs for each interface) otherwise you may not get acurate traffic stats.

That would be incredible. I am always interested to see what sites are doing with equipment similiar to mine. There are so many great things out there and I have but itched the surface.

I would have never thought about the 64-bit counter for the gig ports and that for certain would have bit me.

Please post here or directly with the contact info attached.
Thank you so very much.

We use BS450s, BPS2000s and at one time used Passport 1200s (when they were Accelars). They all work as simple SNMP Hosts for per-port throughput.

As for more specialised stuff, you need to know to search for SNMP Enterprise MIBs from the people who Nortel bought in each case - Rapid City for Accelar (maybe Passport?), Wellfleet for some 'Bay' stuff like BLN/BCN/ASN routers , Bay Networks for others, Alteon for the Alteon range. I've found very little Nortel kit actually has a Nortel MIB :-)

Code: Select all

snmpget -v 1 -c public 192.168.1.3 SNMPv2-MIB::sysObjectID.0
should let you know the enterprise.

Once you know which it is, then mibdepot.com will tell you what things can be measured.
Weathermap 0.98a is out! & QuickTree 1.0. Superlinks is over there now (and built-in to Cacti 1.x).
Some Other Cacti tweaks, including strip-graphs, icons and snmp/netflow stuff.
(Let me know if you have UK DevOps or Network Ops opportunities, too!)

I've attached the templates for the Nortel Passport 8600 I'm using to graph,
  • CPU Utilization
    Image
  • Buffer Utilization
    Image
  • Switch Fabric Utilization
    Image
  • Temperature
    Image
NOTE:The temperature is in degrees Celsius.
Ther are probably other things that the 8600 (or the other devices) offer for information, but those were the ones I was interested in.

All you need to do is import all the data and graph templates and then select the device in your Cacti console. Then in the "Associated Graph Templates" section just add the new graph templates. Cacti should autocreate the required data sources. The graphs may not show up right away, you'll need to wait for Cacti to poll the devices.

My templates were exported from Cacti 0.8.6h, so that's the problem. You'll need to upgrade to the latest Cacti. Sorry man.

Not yet, sorry. I haven't really dug into MIB's for the 5510 or the 5520 yet. I have a few in my network so I'll see if I can get some time to put something together for the 5510 and 5520.

Has anyone experience with the memory monitoring of a 8600 ? I got only 0% utilization at my queries.

I have the same results on my PP8610, but sometimes i have 1, 2 or 3% of use
But according to my colleague, 0-3% is not funny.
