Post by Mathias_Bauer »

Hi,

what are the differences and advantages between Cacti and Mrtg? Cacti shall be the follower of Mrtg, is that right?

Thanks for your answers.

CACTI vs MRTG is something like Win 2K3 vs MS-DOS :)

Hi

Cacti is a PHP / MySQL frontend to RRDtool : http://cacti.net/
Cacti is a complete network graphing solution designed to harness the power of RRDTool's data storage and graphing functionality. Cacti provides a fast poller, advanced graph templating, multiple data acquisition methods, and user management features out of the box. All of this is wrapped in an intuitive, easy to use interface that makes sense for LAN-sized installations up to complex networks with hundreds of devices.
The RRDtool home page used to tell this :
If you know MRTG, you can think of RRDtool as a reimplementation of MRTGs graphing and logging features. Magnitudes faster and more flexible than you ever thought possible
