0.8.7?

0.8.7?
I was wondering when 0.8.7 is coming out? I saw some posts saying that it will contain the ability to authenticate users using Nagios/HTTP Basic auth, thus we won't have to have two logins.
I'm using 0.8.7g and would love this feature, as I have multple AD domains I authenticate users against, but can only use one right now with cacti, while nagios supports all of them due to the http auth mechanism.
Thx!

You are using 0.8.6g...
Because of the significant change in the next release, it was decided that it would be 0.9.0 instead of 0.8.7.
Yes, 0.9.0 will support what you are looking for, but currently we are scheduled to start beta testing towards the end of First Quarter 2006.

tmoore, can you please specify the meaning of "First Quarter 2006" ??
Shall i upgrade my environment (+3700rrd's ) to 0.8.6h ?
A clear "roadmap" (sorry, MS-Slang) would be a big fortune..
BTW: it's not that easy to upgrade such an environment without loosing polling data.. (copying the files and switching the other stuff within 5mins )
Regards, Manuel

Don't wait, upgrade to 0.8.6h, but always backup first.

0.87 was docketed for release last year. However, we have choosen to hold off on that update in order to revampt the product from a templating perspective.
It was also being done to correct some underling issues with the database structure that we thought were not sustainable for a truely enterprise class product. So, we have digressed. The release will come. Not soon enough for some, but worth the wait, I can assure you of that.

Personally I do not like the policy "release early, release often".
I preffer the policy "release rarely good quality product which justifies upgrade need"
For me (personally) 3 issues about next cacti version are essential
- will 0.9 contain plugin architecture from http://cactiusers.org/ that will allow to use Jimmy's plugins easily?
- will current 0.8.6h xml templates be compatible with 0.9?
- will 0.9 contain a tool to upgrade database if the structure of it would change?

I know 0.9 will implement this.TomekN wrote: - will 0.9 contain plugin architecture from http://cactiusers.org/ that will allow to use Jimmy's plugins easily?

Kinda.... I have to qualify that answer. Jimmy is now part of the Cacti Developer group, Jimmy and myself will be working on a plugin arch for 0.9.0. It will have some simularities with the plugin arch that Jimmy has for 0.8.6, but plugins will have to be rewritten to work.TomekN wrote:- will 0.9 contain plugin architecture from http://cactiusers.org/ that will allow to use Jimmy's plugins easily?
Unknown at this time. I think it will be easy to accommidate this, but there will be a little work for the end user after importing an older template.TomekN wrote:- will current 0.8.6h xml templates be compatible with 0.9?
Always.... We are still in debates as to how to implement this, as it will be a very involved process and may take sometime to process on larger installations. The database changes are very extensive.TomekN wrote:- will 0.9 contain a tool to upgrade database if the structure of it would change?
EXACTLY!!! That is part of the reason I haven't been giving anymore timelines. I hate the fact that we can't make them at this point. This is part of the reason we added 2 developers to the development team. We hope to have first round close beta testing sometime this summer, but I'm not making any promises.TomekN wrote:Personally I do not like the policy "release early, release often".

More questions, let me know.

IMHO, minor releases (0.8.6x) should be out more often : for example, 0.8.6h has 4 patches, maybe it deserves a 0.8.6i release ?
This would avoid the questions about patches in this forum...

Frédéric

ETA on 0.9.0?
Is there an ETA on the 0.9.0 release? What will be the feature list of this release? How can I help beta test this release?
Thank you in advance,

Email me to get on the Beta list.
No timeframe yet... I'm tired of saying a date and watching it pass.
