Using templates to graph data from different IPs

Post by ymilner »

 Hello

I need to create a graph showing RSL of a wireless link. Effectively, the needed data should be polled from two different IP addresses (two sides of the link)
I have created Data Template with two different data items ("rsl_left" and "rsl_right"), a host template and a graph template.
The problem: when I generate a host using the host template, the IP address values in both data items is populated from the host IP. Even if I check "Use Per-Data Source Value " in the data template/data source - it would not let me change the ip address!

I need a possibility to basically alter data source parameters, after it has been created via a host template. Can this be done?

Thanks a lot,

Yuly

Hi,

I have similar problem with graphing to data sources:
I'm monitoring the input/output traffic of a switchport an switch A and in/out traffic on switch B. I have 2 graphs for each switchport.
Now I want to graph all together: input from switch A (area) , stacking input of switch B and the output of switch A (as a line) stacking with output of switch B.
I made a graph template with 4 graph items.
The problem: As I make a new graph I must choose the IP-host. I can only choose one! - I need two....

How can I make such a graph? The RRD-files are created and I do not want to make a new one with all 4 RRAs (polling the extra RRD takes time!).

you can have a graph that belongs to no IP host. it gets hard to find them sometimes because you cant ever filter by it then.

then you should be able to select any data source, one from each of your ips, to be placed on this graph.

hope this helps

This means going the old way, with no host templates.
The whole idea though is to use the template method (at least initally), to simplify the cacti population process and troubleshooting.

Maybe the developers could comment on possibility of adding this feature?

Thanks

you dont have to lose host templates just use it differently. setup a new host template to gather what you need. both sides of your link should fall under the same template right? then have 1 graph template that puts it together they way you want.

the host templates work great for gathering data on one host. it doesnt have to do more than that. you should be able to set this up quite easily and still use templates.

I'm afraid I don't get that.

First time I use a host template for, let's say, left side. This creates data sources for this side. This also creates a graph that shows the counters for the left side.

Next time I use the same host template for the right side. It creates the data sources for the righ side, which is Ok. But it also creates another separate graph for this side. This I could live with. But if I would like to add the right side data sources to the original graph - it would not let me do that!
If I edit a graph that was created using a host template, it only lets me select data sources form the same host: I can't add data sources from the right side to a graph, created via a left side host.

dont edit the graphs that were created from the host template. just use the host template to create the data soucres.

make a new graph template. put all the areas, stacks, lines, & comments you want on this template.

then goto 'graph management' and add a new graph. at the next screen choose the graph template you just made but leave the host empty.

in the 'graph management' listing of graphs you will now see your new graph if the filter is set to none. edit this graph and you should be able to select from any of the data sources that cacti has because it isnt limited to any one host.

so you can get your two data sources from two ips on one graph and you have a template for this type of graph
