Ubuntu is using sysklogd as part of it's core software package and kernel logging, and I'm hesitant to break that up to install syslog-ng for use with the syslog plugin for cacti.
Can sysklogd be configured to write to the syslog database for plugin? I've already edited /etc/init.d/sysklogd to enable remote UDP logging and restarted the service. My firewall is set to allow port 514. What must I do next?
Thanks!
Syslog plugin on Debian/Ubuntu (using sysklogd)

From what I understand from this plugin, looked at it a while ago. You need syslog-ng, because it support execution of a script or sql query to get the syslog message into a database.
