Shell management of Cacti database?

Seems like someone must have addressed this issue, but I can't find it...

We have an existing database of switches, routers, etc, that does a nightly export for incorporation into Nagios, Rancid, etc. I would like to find some way to automatically import this data into Cacti nightly as well.

Has anyone done something like this?

I am currently running Cacti 0.8.6 under Linux, but it will likely be migrated to Solaris for production.

Is there someplace else that would be better to post this question?

There has been a users contribution in Scripts and Templates or in Add-Ons. Will be a feature in upcoming cacti 0.9
