Fatal Errow when accessing localhost/cacti

I'm running:

GNU/Linux Debian
Kernal: 2.4.27-2-386
Apache2
PHP4
Mysql

when I try to run localhost/cacti

it gives me:

Fatal Error: Call to undefined function: mysql_connect()in
/usr/share/cacti/site/lib/adodb/drivers/adodb-mysql.inc.php on line 338

now I did some reseach on the fatal error and I do have the php4-mysql installed.

I know when I was apt-get the software it told my I need to redirect a line in my php.ini for the libphp-adodb from *native directory* to /usr/share/adodb but I am not seeing that in the php.ini file at all so I'm not sure if I'm suppose to add it?
