Upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1

Post by smartinez »

It seems that upgrading to 8.1 is the logical thing to do (per the change log) even though I just installed 8.0. Is there a process that I should adhere to in order to ensure a successful upgrade?

Thanks!

Hi,

Basically I made a copy of all my scripts that I use.
I've adjusted the /include/config.php with the correct database/username/password settings

And then placed all files from the new 0.8.1 distribution to my production directories, you keep offcourse the rra/log/scripts directories
You probably might redo a "chmod -R 777" (I know, really unsafe...)and "chown -R" on the "rra" directory, the "log" directory to make sure suddently no permission problems show up...
Something like this should do the trick, you can also backup your database with a dump if you wish...

I did not miss 1 polling with this upgrade ;-) (and I poll every minute)

What about difference in SQL tables?

Post by kevinz »

Does it matter that the cacti.sql files from 0.8 and 0.8.1 differ? Are the differences ignored by the newer version if they're not present in the MySQL database?

Kevinz,

I don't believe anything special changed on the database-layout for this 0.8.1 upgrade since I came from the official 0.8 release
I did not import the new tables myself.
I did not loose anything and so far have not encountered any "bug"

Should I have done this ;-) ?

Just to clarify, no it does not matter. Just as 0.6.x, table changes between stable versions will be automatically taken care of upon an upgrade.

i was running 0.8 before and i thought it might be a good idea to goto 0.81 but....there is something strange, if i goto look at my graphs THERE NONE, even when i goto preview mode there still nothing but previous and next bar says "Showing Rows 1 to 10 of 22 " which is right for my graphs.

Can anyone help, if i can avoid loosing anything i want to, if i cant OWELL :)

Perhaps you are confusing "no graphs" with broken graphs. Make sure you copied your .rrd files from the old 'rra/' directory to the new. Also make sure the web server can read those files. If you want additional debug information, go to "Graph Management", select a graph and click "Turn Graph Debug On".

Hope this helps.

thanks but that is not the problem, when i goto Graph Management there are no graphs there ??? this is getting to the point where i am going to delete cacti and the database and start from fress and just cut my losses.

Maybe i will put it where it is supposed to be this time, in linux.

permissions issues

Post by egarnel »

I had to loosen up the permissions on the rra.log file and log directory ofter I upgraded to 8.1 in order to see the graphs.

I unchecked the graph option under settings | logging and then was able to choke back on the file and directory settings.

for some odd reason, I was able to view graphs with the logging option on along with the more restrictive perms when running 8.0
