Very weird "hosts down" bug?

Recently I added two Cisco Catalyst 2950G switches to Cacti, bringing the total number of devices to 199. When I created the devices I got SNMP information in the top of the screen and I was able to do an SNMP walk of the interfaces.

After creating the graphs, the hosts remained "down". However, I was still able to walk the device for SNMP information in the "create graphs for this host" page. I could even see snmp packets being received on the device (by logging onto console and using "debug snmp packets" command).

In short, Cacti says the device is down, but it is not. Graphs remain empty (NaN). So far nothing weird.

It gets a bit strange when I add another (random) device, does not matter if it's a switch, router,content switch etc. After I add that device (wether it's status is "up" or "down") the former two devices come "up". If I delete the new device (again, it doesn't even have to be "up"), the two switches are "down" again. Same goes for the graphs, when in "up" status, they are updated and actually graph data, but as soon as the status is "down", the graphing stops.

Am I doing something wrong or have I run into a bug?

Are they SNMPv2 devices and do you have net-snmp utilties installed?

What is your host down detection?

Yes and yes.

Host down detection method is "Ping and SNMP - Most Recommended".

What version of php are you running?

When you click on the Cactus on the Cacti Console, what does it say your SNMP support is?

I have just added a fictional device with a non-existing hostname. Even though this device is "down", the two switches went from "down" to "up".

What poller are you running cmd.php or cactid? Also, what version of each?

Hi, I had this problem, too. Try a different ping kind.

Console -> Settings -> Poller -> Downed Host Detection + Ping Type. Try to set the settings different. My servers where now detected as up after set "SNMP Reliable" + "UDP Ping"

I changed "Host Detection" to "SNMP-Reliable" and kept ping-type "ICMP". It works!
