Large Hosting Environment - Hardware Recommendations

Post by sheldonw »

Heya,

I work for a large web/app hosting company that I am currently looking to fully rollout Cacti within for performance monitoring. I'll be mostly using a full SNMP environment with a couple of custom scripts for polling mysql and apache servers, and eventually MSSQL. On average I'm looking at about 5-8 monitors per server.

It consists of over 500 servers, with over half of those running in a Virtual Private Server environment containing 15-20 Virtual OS's, so theoretically around 5000+ servers in total to poll.

Has anyone implemented Cacti in such a large environment? If so, what hardware recommendations do you have to power the Cacti server? And does anyone forsee any complications that I would run into? Will there be a need to implement more then one cacti server to sufficiently handle the load.

Please see http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?t=6206 as a starting point. But surely you will find it hard to enter all devices manually and generate the Graphs manually. API's are not coming until 0.9.0 ...
