room temperature monitor
i am looking for a way to monitor a few rooms in my house with cacti. i have done some searching on google and cant find anything that is low cost that does what i want. all i need is something with an RJ45 port on it that a temp sensor can plug into and that cacti can easily interface with. i would rather not have to plug it into a computer via a serial port. there can be multiple boxes or one box that all the temp probes go to. i read some stuff about the 1wire hardware, but that isnt for sale anymore it looks like and i dont have the electrical circuit knowhow to build my own stuff like that. ip addresses and the number of switchports needed is not really a big deal, just need something small and simple that is relatively low cost.
it could be 5 or so small boxes that plug directly into a switch and have an ip that cacti probes. it could be one rack mount unit "like a switch" that has one ip and collects data on its "ports". is there anything out there like i am looking for?

due to money concerns, the project is probably gonna get scrapped. i cant afford to drop 500 bucks or more to graph some superficial temperatures. since i dont NEED to graph them, they probly wont be. i will just have to pay more attention to the thermometer i have hanging in there on the hottest days to see how things turn out.
if anyone finds low cost solutions, post in this thread. im sure more people would be interested if it didnt cost an arm and a leg.

We have several that we are using and they do OK. Got most doing Temperature/Humidity and one that does air flow to monitor a fan.

It doesn't do snmp but I scrape the page and process it with a perl script. Currently my script can do temp and humidity. The humidity probes are rather expensive but the temp probes we use run around $30 each (or you can buy the chips and wire them yourself and save $25)
The hub itself is around $150 (another $10 gets you the wall wart to power it) and 1 unit supports up to 100 probes/2000 feet of wire (pretty much any one wire or ibutton device should work) there is reasonable support and pretty good turn around time on very technical programming questions. I can help out in that area as well (it isn't very friendly in that respect but at least its well documented)
This was the cheapest working solution I could find in a couple months of looking. Snmp would have been easier but I just couldn't match this one in price and versitility.
I'm always interested in environmental monitoring stuff, so if anyone has any links to stuff they've had sucess with please PM me, the same goes for those seeing info. I've probably looked at 20 different solutions for temp/humidity/airflow/power etc.
Just as a side note to this our maintenance group wanted to keep an eye on temps in hundreds of very geographicaly diverse locations and they had to do it cheap, so they ended up just watching the temp oids of their switches and routers. It doesn't tell them the temp of the room but it does give a good indication of the enviroinment and its pretty easy to tell the difference when an ac unit has failed and when the device is jut under a heavy load.
Just my 2 cents (actual worth may vary)

actually its 3 ports, one power and one 10/100network. One wire is bus technology so you can put multiple devices on the same port. (think thinnet)
a din mount is the one with the rabbit ears sticking out and allows you to mount it on its side (like for the inside wall of a cabinet if you have the DIN rails) the panel mount is the one with wings that lets you flush mount it to a wall or whatever (I think the panel mount is more useful) Either way the thing is feather light and can be velcro'd anywhere you like.
I like the 2 I have they ar a lot better then the (now discontinued) point-six HA-5 I have (serial is a pain to work with) I do also have one of the point-six wireless temp/humidity probes and I have to say it sucks a lot. the range on the wireless is very limited in the building i'm in and we have had ours for 3 or 4 years now and the battery (not replaceable) is getting weak and we are getting about 15 degrees difference in our readings as compared to the wired probes.

wireless is the devil IMO. it has its uses yes, but not in a corporate environment. even though i am doing it at my house, i still wont use wireless.
