how do i upgrade from 0.8.6f to the latest without loseing all my previous data.

the UPGRADE text in the <cactipath>/docs/ contains very easy to follow instructions on how to perform an upgrade on your installation of cacti.
It will also be contained in the extracted tarball for the version you are going to upgrade too.
just don't skip the backup part

If the original install was from .rpm, would it be OK to do a
Code: Select all
rpm -Uvh cacti-0.8.6h.fc3.i386.rpm
or is the .rpm only for a fresh install ?

AFAIK, rpm install will tell you to continue with next installation steps (point your browser to http://.../cactI and so on). So it will do not only as a first install
