Understanding Cacti Basics - Device Section Columns

Post by Amag »

Hey folks -

I'm trying to better understand what the various columns in Cacti's Device section are. I'm specifically talking about Current (ms) and Average (ms).

I have numbers that are 118ms which is impossible, because Cacti is on the same subnet as the devices in question.

How is this number calculated through Cacti? Running something like Smokeping seems to get a much more accurate number.

I've seen a few others ask this question throughout the forum, but haven't been able to find an answer. Can one of the developers (Rony, Witness, etc.) answer this for me?

Thanks as usual!

I could be wrong, but I believe the Current (ms) and Average (ms) are how long it takes Cacti to grab the info from each host. I know when I switched from cmd.php to the cactid poller my times went down because the poller finished quicker

Interesting. So, that number doesn't necessarily have anything to do with latency, as if it takes the CPU of the router x amount of time to process the SNMP request, that's going to be added into the sum?

Does anyone know exactly how these calculations are made?
