strange windows xp anomaly

Post by Diceman »

i have a few graphs that are acting strange. i am graphing hard drive space and virtual memory on my windows xp machine. the virtual memory graph has been empty and showing no data while the hdd graph was graphing fine. i plugged a usb hard drive in and copied about 18 gig from a different server to the usb hard drive on the windows xp machine. the virtual memory graph started showing data, but then my hard drive usage stopped working properly. as soon as the transfer was over and the virtual memory leveled back to zero, the hard drive graph repopulated properly. it is not the usb drive being plugged in nor is it being powered on. i have done both and the graph is ok. it is purely the use of virtual memory that breaks it. any ideas?

Increase your snmp timeout. Windows agent kind of sucks. Another option, remove your floppy ;)

do you mean physically remove the floppy drive from the computer or remove it from cacti. the primary disk is the only drive i am monitoring.

either disable it in the bios or physically disconnect it. A bug in the Microsoft SNMP agent, results in all drives being polled, which causes your floppy to make a noise every 5 minutes, regardless if you're not actually interested in the data.

High cpu / disk usage on the machine you're polling will also result in gaps in the graphs.

lol... Still developing in Windows, although I do share your position to a certain extent.
