So we currently have remote Smokeping servers located out and about at many places. We then scp the rrd files to a central Smokeping server. The remote servers are just collecting smokeping statictics on Websites
We've now discovered Cacti, and have become enamoured with it. We were wondering if it's possible to someone have the remote RRD's be imported into cacti, instead of a central smokeping server. I've read the documentation, and I'm stumped at the first direction,
what the internal datasource name of the rrd file that smokeping creates.
Any idea's on how to figure this out?
Reuse Smokeping RRD's

rrdinfo will show you the internals of the rrdfile.
To get it to work with cacti, you just have to create a data source that matches the rrd structure.

Thanks for the info. Now I'm just plain stumped.
I've done a few searches, and it seems the question has been asked many times over the last few years. I've found at least 5 seperate threads
Has anyone created a template that is Directly for importing Smokeping data? There's alot of work for creating these things, and I'm not exactly sure what I'm doing.
(I know there is the Advanced Ping template, which would replace smokeping on a local machine, but still doesn't give me the option of having them spready around my entire network dumping data in the center.)
I've successfully gotten one of the 20 datasource's to draw, so I'm getting there.

Yippiee.
I don't think I can pull this off, I don't understand what I'm doing enough.
I've created a DataTemplate (Called SmokePingRRD) with a few data source items. (loss, median, ping1, ping2, ..... ping 20)
I've created a DataSource (Called Google) which refrences SmokePingRRD
Now I've just got to create the graph. And this is where I'm at a loss.
I haven't got a clue on how to do all the fancy stuff. I don't even know what the difference between LINE1 and LINE3 is, if there is any.
I've got a graph that is drawing lines from the data sources, but I can't figure out how to make it do the smoke and change the color of the median if it has Loss.
I tried to import the advanced ping 1.3 template, hoping to have some guidance, but I get a hash error. (I didn't install the rest of the files, so that's probably the problem)

Hmm.... I'm on 0.8.6c
....grumble.....
I thought I was on f (or at least e)
Off to upgrade to g and try to re-import.
Separate question. Any reason the devlopers decided to go with letters? I've always been more of fan of going to to 3 dots ( x.x.x.x) rather than tacking on a letter. I guess I'm just OCD'ing a little and like to keep things either all letters, or all numbers.
