Hrm - I did something like this, but managed to screw it up. I didn't really want the interface name, just the alias, so I looked at the specific graph, which looks like this :
I replace ifName in the Title field with ifAlias, and it dies on me. Now that graph is completely missing from the Graph Management screen. I can get to it manually by going to another interface and adjusting the URL, which gets me to the second image with the Access Denied msgs.
But it won't let me change things back. The only way I've found so far is to delete the whole device, then re-add it back in, which is not fun.

The recommended way for Data Queries would be to change title or name by going to Data Queries and then selecting the Graph Template in question. You may add new Suggested Values or change their sequence. So you may define a title/name which includes only |query_ifAlias|.
The Graph Template itself must have Use per Graph Value checked for the title field.

OK. I had no idea that Data Queries was where to go to change something like that. Is there any way to get the interface back again, now that it's currently Access Denied ?
How about just adding one more item to the graph templete - put the Alias as another comment at the bottom of the graph ? Can I create another graph item of comment type and set the text to |query_ifAlias| ?
I wish there was a map somewhere of how all the various bits and pieces of Cacti fit together. (hint hint )
