Will not create RRD file for only one device?

Post by beandip »

Cacti 0.8.6g running on FreeBSD6 (installed from ports).

Everything works fine except for I cannot get Cacti to create RRD files for one device. It can get SNMP info fine and acts like it creates the graph but no RRD file is ever created even after manually running poller.php.

The strange thing is that I had it setup and working on this device when I was first testing Cacti. Once I had figured out the system I started over by deleted the device and setting it up again. Since then I cannot get it to work again. Naturally this is the router at my corporate office which is the one I most want to graph.

I am able to create other devices with no problems.

Could be permissions as well. Easy to tell if you run poller.php from command line as the poller user.

For those wondering, I'm still here, but lost in the shadows. Yearning for less bugs. Who want's a Cacti 1.3/2.0? Streams anyone?

I finally have some time to delve more in the problem.

I tried the poller.php from the other thread mentioned and have checked the permissions.

The strange thing it that on the devices page it says the device is down even though I can see the SNMP data and the Cacti host box pings the router just fine.

If I put Cacti in Debug mode and manually run poller.php I don't see it poll this particular device. I believe this is the problem.

What should I do next to troubleshoot this?

Goto Settings and modify the Downed Host Detection". Select "SNMP - Reliable".

Aha! Thanks LVM. When I did that my host went to an "up" status and then was included in the poller.php process.

Then using the poller debug data I discovered a permissions problem (I probably was not logged in as the cactiuser when I ran the poller.php that created the RRD file).

I fixed the permissions and now it works. Thanks for the help.

I wanted to say thanks again.

I have been wanting to approach management about increasing our bandwidth at the corporate office and now that I can graph it I have the proof to substantiate my request.

Cacti is awesome. It is nice to be able to track trends for future planning.
