how to add other sources ?

The first place I would look is the rrdtool manual:

Then check out the sections on the 'graph' and 'create' functions. Most of the fields in cacti are pulled directly from rrdtool anyways.

I hope in the near future I will be able to produce some decent documentation about how to setup graphs/data sources in cacti.

Yes, you have it almost right.

Data Input Sources are required for Data Sources to gather data. They pretty much tell where a Data Source to get data from.

A Data Source is some piece of data you are gathering whether is be processes or traffic or whatever.

You can place Data Sources on graphs to show the data that has been gathered.

Pretty logical in my mind.

The only thing that may be confusing you is, the Graph Hierarchy is completly optional it can be used to categorize your graphs in a tree-like manner.
