Hi,
I was reviewing BSOD2600's updated Windows install document, and I noticed that Cygwin and Net-SNMP are optional. Could someone explain why I would want to use them...what benefit or purpose would they provide me (in terms of using them with Cacti)? What would I lose out on if I dont install them?
If I plan to just monitor Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 clients, do I need the Net-SNMP option? Or can I use the built in SNMP that comes with Windows?
Thanks
TheDude

A base install Cygwin simply makes it easier to maintain the cygwin dlls and exes that Cacti uses. You could simply use the dlls/exes that come with cactid and rrdtool.
Net-SNMP is required if you need to to poll with SNMPv3. The PHP SNMP agent can handle v1 and v2c. I've found the MS SNMP agent to be decent enough.

Also, in Cacti 0.8.6h, the net-snmp library function "snmpbulkwalk" will speed the querying of large OID tree's in Data Queries. Otherwise, it's nice to have this installed as it save time when troubleshooting issues with users.
