XP instruction, minor edits for Win2K

Here are the installation instructions for XP, the only differences for Win2k would be tha path to winnt instead of windows (I think :lol: ) I hopw this helps more than it hurts. If there are any problems let me know. I am sure raX will correct me if I am wrong anywhere. I did get this to work by following it to the T.

Installation instructions for XP Professional:

To install Cacti on your Windows XP Pro. system you will need to follow these instructions to the

T. I understand that you may not want to install things in the same directory as I have but you

should do this for the first run to make sure you are doing it correctly and it will help you get

the hang of how ALL of the pieces of this puzzle fit together.

Cacti Requires:

RRDTool:
Current Release 1.0.38

MySQL:
Current Release 3.23.51

PHP:
Current Release 4.2.1

Active Perl:
Current Release 5.6.1.632

Apache:
Current Release 2.0.36

Cacti:
Current Release 0.6.8

These Directions assume you are using the above software. These directions DO NOT include IIS

instructions.

-Installing Apache

Make sure you have stopped any IIS web servers before you proceed.

Double click the .msi file to start the install.

Install it as a service.

Use the typical setup. (but change the installation directory)

Install Apache to the c:\ directory. (yes the root of c, it automatically installs to c:\apache2)

Create the c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti directory.

Please restart your machine after the install to make sure the service was installed correctly.

-Installing PHP

Extract PHP to c:\

Rename the installed directory to c:\php, it will be something like php-4.2-1.

Copy php4ts.dll from the c:\php directory to the c:\Windows\system32 directory.

In the c:\php directory, rename php.ini-dist to php.ini and make the following edits (I have included my working php.ini at the bottom):

extension=php_snmp.dll (just remove the ; from the beginning of the line)
include_path=c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti

In the c:\apache2\conf directory, make the following edits to httpd.conf:

-Install ActiveState Perl

The Active Perl website has very good and detailed instructions on how to install. With XP Pro.

you should not have to install any of the additional tools.

Download the Active Perl .MSI install file.

Install Perl to the c:\perl directory.

Make sure the XP default path now contains a c:\perl\bin statement.

-Install cacti

Unzip the cacti tar.gz file to c:\apache2\htdocs directory

Rename the standard cacti directory, something like cacti-0.6.8, to cacti

Everything should be in c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti

-Install rrdtool

Unzip rrdtool to c:\rrd and copy c:\rrd\src\tool_release\rrdtool.exe to c:\rrd

-Install MySQL

Extract the MySQL zip file to a temp directory and run setup.exe.

Install MySQL to the c:\mysql directory.

Run c:\mysql\bin\winmysqladmin.exe

When entering a username and password make sure the user has read and write access to the

following directories:

c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\rra
c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\log

and execute, read and write access to the following directories

c:\php
c:\php\sapi

Reboot your machine.

If winmysqladmin.exe does not run automatically when you restart, run

c:\mysql\bin\winmysqladmin.exe

Once this starts, it may put itself in the task bar as a stoplight, open it up.

Select the databases tab.

Right mouse click on your machine ip/name.

select create database.

Name the database cacti.

Import the default cacti database by:

From the c:\MySQL\bin directory, execute the following command:

mysql cacti < c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\cacti.sql

In the c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\include directory, make the following edits to config.php

$database_default = "cacti";
$database_hostname = "localhost";
$database_server_os = "win32";
The following entries should match what is in your my.ini file (username and password you set

when you installed MySQL). To view your my.ini file you can open winmysqladmin.exe and click on

tht my.ini tab or look at the my.ini file in c:\windows.
$database_username = "cactiuser";
$database_password = "cacti";

Move all MIB files from c:\php\mibs to c:\usr\mibs

Reboot your machine

Creating the scheduled task to run every five minutes:

Select Start--> Settings--> Control Panel

Double click on Scheduled Tasks.

Double click on Add Scheduled Task.

Hit next.

Hit browse.

Go to c:\php and select php.exe.

Select daily and hit next.

Hit next again without changing the time or settings.

When entering a username and password make sure the user has read and write access to the

following directories:

c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\rra
c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\log

read, write and execute access to the following directories

c:\php
c:\php\sapi

Hit next.

Hit finish.

Now Right mouse click on the task you just created, and select properties.

Select the Schedule tab.

Make sure Daily is selected and hit the advanced button.

Check the Repeat task box, set it for 5 minutes and set the duration for 24 hours.

Hit Ok.

In the Run box enter text to make the statement say this:

c:\php\php.exe c:\apache2\htdocs\cacti\cmd.php

The start in box should say c:\apache\htdocs\cacti

I have noticed this quirk. Ever time you edit the task you must re-enter the password for the

account you are using.

Hit Ok

-Notes

You must now access the site by going to http://your-server-ip/cacti and follow the simple setup

steps.

This will get you to a working website. None of the scripts that come with cacti will work. I

was able to get my machine, which had SNMP installed to look at my Cisco PIX and Cisco Router by

using the GUI on the website. It works great. I hope this helps everyone.

Wow! There is a lot to indulge there. I will take some time (when I get some) to follow those instructions and make any nessesary corrections to the "official win32 install docs".

Also thank you so much for taking the time to write this up. This will prove to be very helpful to all win32-based cacti users I'm sure.

I didn't do anythjing to use the scripts :oops: I just went ahead and built a Redhat 7.3 box and installed it on there. I just found that installing it on Windows was to limiting. The Windows shell doesn't have the capabilities of the Linux shell (grep, awk......) I am working on the install write up for Linux so, it should be ready in a few weeks. Sorry about the length of time raX.

Don't worry, I completely understand :D

I never even imagined cacti would run on win32 when I originally developed it, there is still a long way to go to make the experience much smoother under win32.

Anyways, no rush... I have taken a small break from cacti developement (0.8) while I get a few other side projects out of the way. As many of you have experienced too, working on two large projects simultaneously is not fun.

New installations on WinXP please note that you must create a C:\tmp directory. It corrects the following problem:

I just ran through a complete reinstall and noted a couple of adjustments to get cacti to work under Apache 1.3.27 on WinXP.

In the Apache httpd.conf file, make the following changes:
LoadModule php4_module c:/php/sapi/php4apache.dll
AddModule mod_php4.c

If you try to load "php4apache2.dll" on Apache 1.3.27, the Apache service will not start. Also, nothing worked until I added the AddModule line. Is this missing from your instructions?

In the php.ini file, make the following change:
include_path = "c:\apache\htdocs\cacti"

In a previous installation I had trouble getting past the initial install screen until I put the php.ini file in the c:\windows subdirectory.

Finally, don't forget to create a c:\tmp subdirectory.

Otherwise, great instructions.
