Hi, I'v installed cacti, read manual, read two tutorial (http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/htm ... graph.html, http://translate.google.com/translate?h ... en%26lr%3D) and still don't understand how cacti works and what should be done to add some new graph, which uses script with parameters. I have fresh cacti install. And some working graphs (were there after install)
Some questions:
- why is in the 'add graph' (for localhost) only some subset of available graph templates?
- how can I set parameters to data input methods? for example ping host. there is <ip> parameter. How can I add graph, which pings 192.0.0.1 and shows results in graph? Where should I put the address (192.0.0.1).
- how the templates connects together? there should be some logic behind ;]
Thanks for any hints or advices or more tutorials or beginner's guides...

Well, quickly, Data Input Methods are called by Data Sources and Data Source Templates. So, those parameters will show up in the Data Source area. There are also special variable types that can be used as well, like hostname.

I'm trying hard but all experiments failed. I just broke the working samle 'ping latency' graph.
I'm trying to create graph with responses to two hosts - host1 and host2. I created a mess everywhere but with no luck. Here's my stepst, what am I doing wrong?
- go to 'data input methods', add new method
Unix - Ping IP
script/command
perl <path_cacti>/scripts/ping.pl <ip>
input: ip (blank Special Type Code)
output: out_ms
- go to 'data templates', set 'data input method' to method create before, set 'custom data: ip address to my host'
- go to 'graph templates' add new, add new item with data source crated before. (what are graph item inputs - some were automatically added?)
- add new graph based on template before. no data there...
- in data source some items added automatically. what is it?
I still don't understand it too much. It would really need better documentation with some 'getting started' guide...
