Poller?

Hello,

I just install Cacti for windows (0.8.6g) following the installation guide, but there are things that I don't understand.

Reading the install guide, they tell us to install cactid, configure it and then to install cacti and setup the poller.php, why install and configure both?

I setup a scheduled task and am now running the poller.php every 5 minutes.

Reading the install guide again, it is explained that we need to put the path of cactid in the settings of cacti, so what am I finally using?

By the way, there is a mistake in the install guide:

SNMPGET, SNMPWALK Paths:

c:\net-snmp\bin\snmpget.exe
c:\net-snmp\bin\snmpget.exe

One should be: c:\net-snmp\bin\snmpwalk.exe

Apparently reading the website, I saw that cactid seems to be more efficient. So I'd rather use cactid rather than the cmd.exe, but do I have to install some more stuff?

They explain on the website in the cactid part how to configure it for win32, having to install cygwin and compile stuff, but in the cactid archive (0.8.6f-1) that I downloaded, I saw that there was a cygwin dll, an executable file and a conf file.

They say in the cacti install guide that :

"If you either have Cygwin installed, or plan on installing it, remove the 3 DLL files and the SH.EXE file from the c:\cactid directory."

But there are no such files in it, am I missing some files to use cactid?

Or if I follow the install guide, and put the path for cactid in the path settings of cacti, I can use only the cactid poller and not use the scheduled task?

As you can see, I am a little bit lost :/

2) Cactid is optional, but can may be used because it is considerably faster than cmd.php for polling.

3) By putting the path in cacti does nothing more than tell cacti where cactid is, in case you decide to use it. Settings | poller | type [cmd.php|cactid] is what sets which poller you use.

Hi thanks for your link.

I read the documentation, and want to use cactid.

I changed the poller in the settings of cacti as you told me, but it does not seem to work since. My graphs are now not displaying any data anymore :/

In the cactid folder:

I have three files: a conf file, an executable and a cygwin dll.

In the conf file, I filled the following parameters: DB_Host, DB_Database, DB_User and the DB_Pass

Should I do something else to have cactid working?

How is cactid launched?
I did not see any polling interval field to fill for cactid, so how is cactid launched? By a scheduled task?
I launched it myself but did not get any new points on the graphs...

Also in the poller section:

Do you know where I could get information about these two features and how to use them?

* Maximum Concurrent Poller Processes
The number of concurrent processes to execute. Using a higher number when using cmd.php will improve performance. Performance improvements in cactid are best resolved with the threads parameter

And

* Maximum Threads per Process
The maximum threads allowed per process. Using a higher number when using cactid will improve performance. NOTE Applies only to CACTID!

The documentation is way out of date. Everyone is way too busy to keep everything the way we would like.

1) My normal polling is working since the beginning, but I am pretty annoyed with the command windows being opened every 5 minutes... And as said before, cactid is better

)

2) Ok, how come then, that when I change in the settings of the poller cmd.php to cactid, I got no data stored on the graphs anymore? Do I have to change something else?

1) Then run the scheduled task as a different user or use a vbs script to hide the cmd windows.

2) Turn the logging level in cacti to debug, then manually run cactid.exe. What errors do you see?

I turned the logging level to debug in cacti, then ran the cactid manually, checked the cacti.log in C:\Apache2\htdocs\cacti\log, but got nothing coming from cactid.

I then selected cactid in the settings for the poller and got that what the task launched it:
