group-based usermanagement

Post by sleepy »

Hello,

it would be fine to have a group-based usermanagement in cacti like this:

- admin can create groups.
- admin can give these groups rights/permissions/access to graphs/plugins/realms/etc.
- user gets his collection of rights/permissions/access in being a member of one or more groups.
- a user can be a groupadmin of his group to add/modify/delete other users within his group.

If you have many users and many hosts, it takes a lot of time to apply rights/permissions/access for every user to particular hosts. Editing users groupmembership would be much faster at a lower risk of errors.

Sounds like a need for a "user template"

I like the group approach as a class of user so that you don't have to modify all the users to make one change. So, as we grow this thing to the next level, groups are a must.

BTB, could someone tell me what the next level is, my visions becomming blurry. Must be age...;)

Isn't the next level something where :

- Cacti sets itself up, by itself, needing no help from us poor humans
- then figures out all the SNMP devices for you in the network
- lists all the nodes you'll "really need" and ignores those you definitly won't need in the future
- fixes all the SNMP issues out in the network, as well as highlighting those security issues with a "tut tut!!"
- makes sure that the coffee is made for you in the morning....

I like the version that helps my wife with the laundry and goes to work for me when I work too late on Cacti.
