How to import MIB files downloaded from Manufacture..

Post by Lmiller »

Hello again, I was having install problems. I think I went thru them all. It took me 2 weeks to get the web interface to come up and then almost a week after that to get graphs to come up. And today, I finally have data in my graphs. Special thanks to everyone that responded to my posts, I appreciate all you have done. And I invite anyone that is having install problems to contact me with questions. I am in no way an expert, but it is the least I can do after all everyone has done for me.

Now, I have a question of my own. To give an example, I want to monitor a ADSL DSLAM built by paradyne. On Paradyne's website they are kind enough to offer MIB's to download. I put them in the MIB directory of PHP but this has no effect. How do I import them so Cacti can use them? I thought about the import function, but it requires XML files. Do I need to somehow convert these to XML? Anyone see where I am going here?

Thanks.

Lmiller,
what about compiling a HOWTO?
Did you know about the walkthrough at http://cacti.net/documentation.php?

As to the second item. You'll find a walkthrough for that at http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/htm ... thods.html. See also http://www.cacti.net/downloads/docs/htm ... graph.html and the post at http://forums.cacti.net/viewtopic.php?t=4143

Lmiller,

Cacti doesn't use MIB files in any way. You have to provide it with the OIDs of the data you want to retrieve and graph (see those tutorials). You can use the MIB files yourself to work out the OIDs of the data you want (the MIB is like an upside-down-tree, bottom-up).

The MIB files are very beneficial for building templates, as you can't interpret that data returned from an snmpwalk without them. Once the templates are built, you no longer have a need for them.

GetIf is not the best tool in the world, as it does not have v2/v3 support, but it's my tool of choice.
