there are several appreoaches to this, depending on where the rrd originally is and how to get it.
The basics of how to make cacti using an "external" rrd have already been discussed on the forum. There is no need for "importing" the rrd, as cacti uses plain rrds "as is".

- rrd is local but is filled by another process
You may define only the "graphs" with cacti and refer to the external rrd. You should deactivate the cacti polling for that device
rrd is remote, but should be displayed "nearline" (nearly online)
Same as above, but to get access to the rrd your cacti server must get access to the files (e.g. nfs for unix boxes)
rrd is remote, access to data of the last day is enough
Same as above, but some ftp/scp/... method should be used to make the rrd available.
