I added the following to the top of the Graph Template list for the Interface Statistics (bits/sec) Data Query section:
|host_description| - Traffic - |query_ifName| (|query_ifAlias|)
I then went to Graph Management, selected all the interfaces from this Catalyst 2900XL (IOS 12.0(5)) switch and selected "Reapply Suggested Names".
The title was changed on only 2 of the interfaces, even though 6 of the interfaces had ifAlias defined, here is an SNMP Walk of the ifAlias OID:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.1 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.2 = STRING: 10.12.0.1 from 3620 Router
IF-MIB::ifAlias.3 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.4 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.5 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.6 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.7 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.8 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.9 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.10 = STRING: public interface 3000 concentrator
IF-MIB::ifAlias.11 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.12 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.13 = STRING: outside interface pix 506
IF-MIB::ifAlias.14 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.15 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.16 = STRING: inside interface pix 506
IF-MIB::ifAlias.17 = STRING: private interface for 3000 concentrator
IF-MIB::ifAlias.18 = STRING: 10.10.1.1 from 3620 Router
IF-MIB::ifAlias.19 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.20 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.21 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.22 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.23 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.24 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.25 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.26 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.27 = STRING:
IF-MIB::ifAlias.28 = STRING:
The only 2 that changed to the new title were the ones with the IP addresses at the begining of the description (10.10.1.1 from 3620 Router, 10.12.0.1 from 3620 Router), the others remained the same.
If I go to those Graphs and manually change the Title to include the (|if_Alias|) then that string just appears verbatim in the title.
I am running Cacti 0.8.6f.
Also (2nd question), is there any chance that the ifAlias will ever work with the funky CatOS .1.3.6.1.4.1.9.5.1.4.1.1.4.<card>.<interface> OID?

Reapply Suggested Names to add if_Alias not always working

same here...glad it's not just me...
Hi.
I have also posted a problem with the graph title for ifalias & ifindex (for catos interface descriptions )
I have worked out through playing around and desperation that that if you go into the graph template for the interfaces in question and hit save, then go back to the graphs it will resolve the name - BUT - you will have to go through all graphs that reference this graph template and reapply the names,
the post in question is here and goes into more detail:

This sounds like the same strange behaviour, I have it on patched ver.f on windows 2003
Thanks,
Lard

Exactly the same behaviour that I am seeing - on two seperate cacti servers,rkramer wrote:I've found that going into the template and changing WILL affect all graphs out there already, but the strange part is that new graphs don't always pick up the name, sometimes I have to go back to the template and re-save it, at which point the new graphs pick it up also.
Glad in a way as I was beginning to think it was something that I may have changed to cause the problem but even applying a different interface graph template and adding the ifalias to the title causes the same problems when adding new devices....
Thanks,
Lard

Hello All,
Nothing new to report apart from this is still happening on both our Cacti servers - new graphs not showing the correct description as picked up from the device,
Though some more behaviour with this is that it would appear to depend on the device that is being added....strange but true!
It would also appear that using a different template hasnt solved the issue (so not a problem with templates)
To explain the above, I added 6 Pix firewalls and 30 Cisco routers to a cacti server today and used the standard interface bits/second for all interface statistics....
All the firewalls picked up the correct ifname/ifalias and displayed on the graphs, NONE of the cisco routers in question worked - they all are not displaying the correct descriptions - this sounds bizzare but all the routers were low end Cisco 1750's, when I added some new 3750 switches as a test it showed all the interface descriptions perfectly!!!
Any input or others had/resolved this issue please?
Is this only happening on Cisco devices?
What other type of device is this happening on?
We know the following:
1. Saving the graph template fixes this problem after you add a device (but you need to reapply the names to ALL devices that use the template)
2. Certain devices do not display this problem, others fail everytime - could this be device specific?? (sound crazy?)
3. I certainly only see this on certain cisco devices (all low end routers?!?!)
Anything else people can help with appreciated - feel free to add your conclusions to the list and I may even get my debugging log file analysing hat on (though I would prefer to find out if someone else has worked it out as this is all quite new to me - I can do SNMP but PHP is a whole new ballgame )
Thanks,
Lard
