Linux resource monitoring over SNMP

Post by fireform90 »

Hello,

I am fairly inexperienced with cacti, and after spending a couple days looking around the forums and trying to find concrete information on this I am still at a loss. If someone could point me in the right direction I would be greatful.

I would like to monitor system load, temperatures, apache/mysql useage for several different servers via SNMP (if possible). Is there a guide on how to do this? I am unsure how the authentication works on the remote server, how do I create a user/group on the remote machine so my cacti polling box can connect?

I've already got several switches monitored without an issue.

If this question is already asked, im sorry but I couldn't find it anwhere :(

System load is a ucd/net standard template. But it relies on the snmp host MIBs, as I remember. So you will get some fun using this for AIX boxes (search the forum, you'll find some hints on how to do this for AIX). As to the temperature you'll have to search for the snmp OIDs of the manufacturer; there is no standard.
For apache and mysql there are some posts in the forum that supply templates, that you may easily load into your cacti.
Apache: http://forums.cacti.net/about4028.html
MySQL: http://forums.cacti.net/about6108.html (Pay attention to read this INSTALL info carefully; there is need for some mysql granting in there)
Both of them and lots more are used in our cacti installation!

happy cactiing
