Pre-installation question on Cacti architecture

Post by mr_scary »

Hi, I am considering Cacti for our network but I can't seem to find a clear explanation on its architecture.

What I want to do is monitor our internet gateway traffic but to keep as much software as possible off that system.

Essentially, I want to know whether Cactii requires rrdtool, webserver, mysql, etc all on the host being monitored or is it possible to have, say, just rrdtool installed and have the data sources sent to a remote host running the other software? I already have a webserver and mysql server running on a different host and I would like to use them for this additional application.

Thanks for any advise in this matter.

The web interface, snmp tools and rrdtool have to be on the same server, not the device/server being monitored. The database can be on a seperate server, but usually, you have them on the same.

You can use snmp or script to monitor things on remote servers.

What do you mean by that? If not on the monitored server then where?

Direct question:

Can I have the database (MySQL), webserver (Apache), and Cacti on a remote system (not the server being monitored)?

I guess we have a break down in understanding here.

People monitor all sorts fo things with cacti. The server, the one running cacti, must be what you are refering to as the monitoring server?

Anyways, what exactly do you want to know?

By monitored (not monitoring) server I am referring to, in my case, my internet gateway. This is what I want monitored.

So what I want to know is whether I can monitor this server without installing the aforementioned software (and instead putting it on a remote system). Understandably, I want to minimize the amount of software installed on this firewall system. I am sure I need to install rrdtool but I want to avoid MySQL and Apache.

No, you don't have to install any software on your internet gateway (not rrdtool). All your softwares are installed on another host, and this is on this host that you have the results of polling.

You may have to install an snmp agent on the gateway, but you do not need to install any cacti componets on the gateway.

An SNMP agent. This is good news. I'll begin my research. Thanks for everyone's time.
