Monitor remote hosts without snmp

How can I get load data off a remote system that I have ssh access to?
I also have nagios running on the remote system with nsca. I haven't gotten that to work, that's for nagios anyway. I'm trying to collect load data for a graph. I was thinking that I could use an id file to connect with ssh and just CRON collections to happen periodically. Ofcourse I want the check interval to be like every 20 minutes or somehting, not a lot. I just have 3 machines to monitor. It's funny I went from nsca to check_by_ssh to realizing I needed to get this into a cacti graph. SNMP isn't allowed. Although, version 3 or encrypted smmp would be acceptable if anyone has a how-to on that it would be great! I'm running SuSE 9, enterprise (SLES) on all my machines.

Here's a thought...if you can run snmp locally on the machine you want to monitor and then tunnel it over ssh. see

Are you not allowed to run snmp traffic over the link (firewall rules, etc) or not allowed to have snmp installed on the target machine for security reasons?

I'm not sure about that yet, but I'll assume I can run snmp locally and give it a try.
