How much can Cacti handle?

Post by Luke »

I've done my fair share of perusing this site. Insanely helpful and I love the work that people have put into modifying/developing this fantastically simple and useful tool.

My question then is: On your average build of server (P4 3.0GHz, 1-2GB of RAM, Fast SCSI HD) how many nodes (or graphs, whichever would be easier) can your average build of Cacti take?

We've got a BIG network. Easily ISP size. And we're measuring about 25 graphs per device with a few hundred devices in so far. We're expanding fast though and I'm curious to know when I should set up another server for Cacti to collect data from new devices. The system is surprisingly resilient. But when should I start a new server to supplement the old one?

Luke,

We have a few "customers" (if that's what you call them) who have over 2000 hosts on dual HT 3.06 P4 and still have room to grow. RRD updates take a good bit of time without fast hard drives though. That is your big factor.

For those wondering, I'm still here, but lost in the shadows. Yearning for less bugs. Who want's a Cacti 1.3/2.0? Streams anyone?

Awesome, thanks. Any specific recommendations beyond dual P4?

We're up to 275 devices and about 2800 graphs. I just wanted to know when it would be time to split the data up amongst more than one Cacti server.
