Installation help PLEASE!

Post by SomeDude »

Setup:
Windows 2003 Server - SP1
Cacti 0.8.6f
RRD 1.2.6
MySQL 4.0.24
PHP 5.0.4

I've followed the setup documentation to the letter, but when I try to load the cacti webpage, I get the dreaded:

Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user: 'cactiuser@localhost' (Using password: YES) in C:\InetPub\wwwroot\cacti\lib\adodb\drivers\adodb-mysql.inc.php on line 339

When I first got the message and started troubleshooting, I suspected that the problem might be due to the password hash used in the version of mySQL I was using (4.1). To eliminate this as the problem, I removed 4.1 completely and installed 4.0. I still got the same error.

I've checked, double-checked, triple-checked, quadruple-checked, etc. my .\include\config.php file, my php.ini file, and my mySQL permissions. I've tried giving permissions to cactiuser@localhost, cactiuser@127.0.0.1, and cactiuser@172.31.4.62 (the actual IP address).
I've even changed the username and server in the config.php file to non-existent names just to make sure that the file is being read correctly (it is).

No matter what I do, I get the 'Access denied for user' message. Any help at all will be appreciated.

BTW, I've setup Cacti on Windows 2000 in the past and didn't encounter any of these issues.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I had a similar prob... If you are using cactid, locate your cactid.conf file and update the username and password in that. Also, Windows doesn't seem to like "localhost" in this file for "DB_Host", so change it to 127.0.0.1 like this:

DB_Host 127.0.0.1

Hope that helps,
Jason

Thanks Jason... I neglected to state it earlier, but I've also tried all combinations in the cactid.conf file as well.

I'd love to get this working, but I'm in the process of installing on Unix now... Windows was just giving me too much pain. :D

I'll try again because I did have an authentication prob way back on my first install in January. I can't seem to find any reference to it now, but there was a bug in the version of MySQL that was out at the time pertaining to creating new users and the "GRANT ALL" permission setting. I'm afraid I don't recall the details, but the instructions that were online here on cacti.net did not compensate for the bug. It led to authentication errors even though the account seemed to create just fine.

This time around on the 2003 machine, I did both the database creation/import and the user creation/permissions from within phpMyAdmin (I'm a GUI kind o' guy). No issues at all.

This is off-topic, but I noticed you listed RRD 1.2.6... I DID have a ton of problems with that. Everything polled like a champ, but it would never create the RRD files. I tried version 1.2.10 as well with the same results. I dropped back down to RRD 1.0.49 and changed the setting in Cacti's control panel to use RRD version 1.0.x and everything fired right up. If you do get past the SQL problem keep that in mind if you don't see any graphs!!

Good luck,
Jason
