Stuck on login
I've just installed 0.8.6d as a new install and fired it up for the (technically) first time, gone through the initial config (PHP directories, etc) and am now at the login. I enter 'admin' for both user name and password, hit submit and... there I am back again. Anything I do just gets me back at this password prompt.
I'm entering the name/pass correctly, so far as I can see - there is no error message and if I deliberately enter an incorrect combination I do get the error message. It's just not going anywhere.
Now, the small print
I was running 0.6.8 on Windows 2K fine. I attempted an upgrade and got told I needed a new database, so I decided to do a complete new install instead. I replace the existing setup, then restarted and put the existing one back then installed in parallel. I know nothing about PHP or mySQL or HTML.
My web server is omniHTTP which works great for 0.6.8. PHP is 4 (not sure of exact version but obviously a couple of years old) and mySQL is 3.23.52-nt. None of my apps are in their default directories, but since Cacti 0.6.8 works fine I assume that's not a problem. I've tried Firefox and MSIE, locally and remote, and the problem is exactly the same each time. I even rebooted the server and left it overnight just in case it might fix itself

Mmmm. 3.23 just scrapes onto the requirements list so perhaps you have a point there. I'm kind of loath to fix something that isn't broken (for the other stuff) in case it starts a chain reaction. Can you imagine a failure mechanism based on mySQL that would give my symptoms?
Hmmmm. I'll have to check the upgrade dox for mySQL and see how simple it is...

For anyone else getting this problem, the solution was... upgrade PHP4 to PHP4
It seems I was using an early PHP4 that came with my web server (OmniHTTPd). Installing the most recent PHP4 fixed the problem.
But... the new PHP4 is incompatible with the previous Cacti scripts! I had planned to run both Cacti versions in parallel whilst I transferred data and graphs as I got round to them, but it seems I have to make a choice between the old and new then install the appropriate PHP.

I'm running php 4.3.11 with no problems. You must have some of that older php files laying around.
