Get SNMP data as fast as possible

Post by marco_rf2004 »

Hi,

Cacti is really a great tool but I have a little question :
I would like to collect traffic data from an ethernet interface as fast as possible because my graph should be very accurate.
How to do that ?
Maybe a :
"while true; do php poller.php ; done" could work ?
my poller.php runs during 2 sec.
I read the topic "cacti every minute??" but I don't know how to modify RRA to make my graph accurate as I want.
Somebody can help me ?

Thanks
Marc

Every 2 seconds?

For what? You would be better off running something like Ntop or a sniffer. Cacti isn't really designed for that short of a polling cycle.

Even if you had a cray super computer, or 24 clustered PC :D , you would still not complete a polling cycle in 2 seconds.

That's my conclusion too :)

For your information, I replace Cacti by PRTG which is designed for what I want and polling cycle are every 5 seconds. Monitoring of WinXP, Netapp and Cisco works very well, no need a cray ! :)

Thanks guys

Cray thing was a half joke to give you an idea of what it would take to for cacti to complete one poll in 2 seconds.. :P
